Organopónicos - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Organopónicos are a system of urban organic gardens in Cuba. They often consist of low-level concrete walls filled with organic matter and soil, with lines of drip irrigation laid on the surface of the growing media. Organopónicos provide access to job opportunities, a fresh food supply to the community, neighborhood improvement and beautification of urban areas.

...Cuba has more than 7,000 organopónicos. More than 200 gardens in Havana supply its citizens with more than 90% of their fruit and vegetables. Yields have more than quintupled from 4 to 24 kilograms per meter squared between 1994 and 1999, and currently around a million tons of food per year is produced in the organopónicos.[3] More than 35,000 hectares (over 87,000 acres) of land are being used in urban agriculture in Havana alone.[4] The city of Havana produces enough food for each resident to receive a daily serving of 280 grams (9.88 ounces) of fruits and vegetables. The urban agricultural workforce in Havana has grown from 9,000 in 1999 to 23,000 in 2001 to more than 44,000 in 2006.[4]

Amazing.

Cave Clan

The idea of a group that would explore under Melbourne was formed by three teenagers during the summer of 1985/6. On January the 26th, the trio of explorers ventured out to explore the Diamond Creek Mines in the northeast of Melbourne and the Cave Clan was born.

The Cave Clan started exploring mines, caves and soon included stormwater drains. These days, the Cave Clan have explored just about every type of artificial tunnel or chamber there is. Gilligan in The Room, Maze, Melbourne. c1988. (Photograph: Sloth)

In the beginning, the Cave Clan used to meet fellow explorers by leaving messages in the drains, or purely by chance - coincidently bumping into them down below. In 1990 the Cave Clan got a post office box and that made them much more accessible to outsiders: the media, the curious, fellow explorers - people just like yourself.

Tyler and I had some great chats in the 10 hours up (and 8 back) from Canberra, this is one of the many things that came up... remind me to follow this up!

Norwage.

Hey Line! I remember you!

I got a job in Ostehuset (http://www.ostehuset.no/) and with MSF (http://www.legerutengrenser.no/). Both jobs, I just walked in and asked for a job!

I had a working holiday visa (http://www.norway.org.au/Embassy/Visa-and-other-permits1/Working-Holiday-Visa... (which I got in the nehterlands like 6 weeks before, and just sorted out a skattekort and bank account, when I got there (over the first few weeks). I stayed in my best mate from CR's house, who is Gard's brother. His dad also helped me translating things.

Then I just spent my days working, because my friend was in Florida and I needed cash. This is how much I made, and when I worked— https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/pub?hl=en_GB&hl=en_GB&key=0AvZPtk...

Sondre came for Christmas and we went skiing, and then I went back to work until February. Then I went to Svalbard for 10 days, and Couchsurfed there. (http://www.couchsurfing.org/people/jonski90/) I really felt on top of the world. I hung out with some uni kids up there and then left Europe for South america... and ended up in USA about 6 months later...

I don't know if that helped, or I just got stuck being nostalgic... what do you need? Who is visiting? How is Norway post UWC? Have you been to the Oil Museum? Can you tell the people at ostehuset something for me?

All the best,
Jono

Or Perth." » "I have 3 months holiday in Australia, I can see it then, and in breaks. Why 'leave' for not much gain. Uni life is good here." » "Alright, if thats the case, then I am back to looking overseas" » "I should just hang out with all my UWC firends..." » "Europe. or the US..." » "Hang on, I study media. That has huge potential for making the semester abroad far more than just "cultural" fun..." » "Imagine studying Media in China... or Cuba... or the US for that matter."

And that is where I am at now. Where is somewhere I can go, that will really change or shake my current approach to Media (and Politics)? I guess seeing a few friends along the way would be good too.

Week 6 - 04/04 - 12/04/2010

"As Penelope carries our trio to the conclusion of their 70 hour marathon, they find themselves stranded in Buenos Aires while Penelope, exhausted and running on 3 cylinders, rests and recuperates. Beds and couches of hospitality, lined with friendship and caring, see the brothers through Colonia (Uruguay), Cordoba, and Alta Gracia while they wait for Penelope to recuperate.

This video is especially dedicated to Juan (and Pato) of Cordoba, Argentina, who helped three complete strangers survive El Fat Hand's ordeal and bring to the forefront this adventure's theme of genuine human compassion."

Over a year ago by now. Crikey, these last 6 months have flown by...

Wide Brown Land

This just blew my mind.
This is a town in Australia, called "Kiwirrkurra"

Click the link through to google maps, put it on satellite view, and zoom in and out.

I am researching 'indigenous history' for social relations, and ended up on a page about the "lost tribe", or the 'last' Aboriginal Australians to be 'discovered'. — the Pintupi Nine.

"Medical examination revealed that the Tjapaltjarri clan (as they are also known) were "in beautiful condition. Not an ounce of fat, well proportioned, strong, fit, healthy"."

This country, heck this planet, is vast. So, so vast.

Couchsailing

My captain of a 35 pie sailing boat is currently looking for a crew to cross the pacific. I will be the other crew for the trip.
The boat is actually in Costa Rica and will leave to French Polynesia/Tahiti within the next weeks.
He will then go through the Pacific islands (Tonga, Samoa, New Guinea...) until Australia and then to South Africa and Brazil. Kind of a long trip of something like 2 years...You can leave the boat somewhere between Tahiti or Brazil...it's up to you.

Here is his website:
www.abordesonia1.blogspot.com/
It's in french but the captain speaks an english OK and I do speak english, french and spanish.

The deal is we are 3 on board and everybody pay his share part of the food and the fuel. Not much... The captain pays for maintenance and port fees.
If you have experience it's better but it's not mandatory.
Btw, the captain is a great guy.

Couchsailing. Get on board. I wish I was.

The 15 Things I Own | Andrew Hyde

Media_httpfarm3static_oorah

WIth Pez and Sonds about to set of on their own 'briefcasing' trip, I am reading more and more about others doing the same... There is no original ideas. And that's a good thing.

I should get on to the manifesto none the less. Write down some of my own thoughts on things like "constant borrowing" (which for me is more the 'do unto others, thing). I think it comes back to reshaping community.

The Gini Coefficient

Media_httpuploadwikim_biqyn

"Differences in national income equality around the world as measured by the national Gini coefficient. The Gini coefficient is a number between 0 and 1, where 0 corresponds with perfect equality (where everyone has the same income) and 1 corresponds with perfect inequality (where one person has all the income, and everyone else has zero income)."

Surprises for me were Bangladesh, Mongolia, Kazakhstan. But i guess there are all "equally" poor? Or is that unjustified.

I am looking at this for places I might be interested in doing a semester abroad. Other factors I am considering at this point are climate, language, size. Suggestions welcome. Antigua and Barbuda looks nice.

Down South

I just spend the weekend in 'the Grampians' one of Australia National Parks. It was what I needed.
There was no Internet, or even phone reception and for those few days playing monopoloy, hiking, and rockclimbing I was really able to breath.

It's not as though life in 'the big smoke' was particularly stressful, but I do know that it feels good to have taken that time out.

While we were there, we also dug out some of Dad's mate's 'Squeeza''s footage of their time in Antarctica. 'Nuff said.

Pyongyang Style

This 10 minutes of footage from behind a closed country is breathtaking.
There are no ads. Just propaganda.

Imagine a world without 'Coke'. Imagine if the only world you knew was built around two subway stops in Pyongyang.

This is footage from a 'guided tour'. I want to see the country.
I read somewhere people from Japan go to North Korean on holiday's for its "Clean Air". We have all seen the 'North vs South Lights Comparison'.

I am still fascinated by North Korea. I am constantly amazed that such a country (and others like it) exist today. As much as don't wish hunger and oppression on any human, I also cannot help but think a simpler life, without the vices and perversion of "western society" is in some way, beautiful.

This post was made possible through freedom of information, culture and expression.
That I do wish for all.

Day by Day, 10/6/09 - 28/9/09

I have had this lying around in my "evernote" box for ages, and will hopefully be able to use it for something soon (read:tintin) There was a scare where I thought I lost it all, thank the mighty google gods it was backed up.

I should keep a real diary, instead of dot points. Still, anything is better than nothing.

It is yet another reminder to me just how important documentation is.

It's long, and largely in my own digital 'shorthand', making it pretty limited apart from now being on record.
